I am deeply concerned about the fate of my fellow Swedish citizen Dawit Isaak. I urge you to do everything within your power for the sake of Dawit Isaak.
The Eritrean regime forbids Sweden from having an embassy in the country. Sweden can use the already existing EU embassies in Eritrea. We can help the democrativ movement with access to internet, international newspapers, contacts with journalists, English courses and many other things.
Sweden has to pursue a firm and consistent policy towards undemocratic regimes. Press freedom is often the first thing a dicator attacks. Journalists and writers must be allowed to work freely. In every official contact with the Eritrean regime, or any other country on Africa's horn, should the issue of freedom of expression be discussed.
Not until 2005 did Sweden really engage in Dawit Isaak's fate. In november, Dawit was temporarily out of prison, but he was soon brought back in. The Swedish embassador Bengt Sparre has worked with the issue, but now it's time for Sweden to show that we consider the situation seriously on the highest level. Yet, no Swedish minister has visited Eritrea. Therefore, the foreign minister and/or the prime minister should go to Eritrea to demonstrate the high priority of Dawit Isaak's case.
Eritrea is one of the world's poorest countries and is extremely dependent on monetary aid. Today, Sweden only offers humanitarian aid, which is good. Sweden should work for the same policy in EU. We should also offer to raise the humanitarian aid, provided that it is canalized through international charities. In this way Sweden can help building the civil society and breaking the governments monopoly.
